How do I send a text message or set reminders using my voice without typing?
Direct Answer
You have two easy ways: 1) Talk directly to your voice assistant by saying "Hey Siri, send a text to [Name]" or "Hey Google, text [Name]" completely hands-free (and ask it to set reminders). 2) Or inside any text conversation, tap the small microphone icon on your keyboard, speak your message and punctuation words out loud, and tap Send.
Why You Might Want to Do This
- To send long, thoughtful text messages and set reminders without struggling to tap tiny keyboard keys or hunting for reading glasses.
- To rest your hands and fingers if you have arthritis, stiff joints, or difficulty typing with two thumbs.
- To write messages and set daily appointment or medication reminders hands-free while cooking, driving, or resting.
- To compose messages up to 3 times faster just by talking naturally.
Before You Start
- Open any text conversation in your Messages app, or have your phone nearby ready to hear your voice.
- Make sure your phone microphone (at the bottom or top of the phone) is not covered by a thick protective case or your hand.
- Speak in a calm, regular conversational voice 6 to 10 inches from the phone — you do not need to shout.
This turns your spoken words into written text on screen (or sends hands-free messages). It is NOT an audio voice memo.
Step-by-Step Instructions

1
Method 1 (Completely Hands-Free): Ask Siri, Gemini, or Google Assistant
Say clearly out loud: "Hey Siri, text Sarah saying I am on my way" (or on Android: "Hey Google, text Sarah saying I am on my way" or "Gemini, text Sarah"). Your phone will wake up, transcribe what you said, show the message preview on screen, and ask if you are ready to send it.

Set Hands-Free Reminders and Timers using your voice
You can also use voice to stay organized without opening apps. Say: "Hey Siri, remind me to take morning medicine at 8 AM" or "Hey Google, set an oven timer for 25 minutes." Your assistant confirms the reminder with a chime and alerts you right on time.

Method 2 (In-App Dictation): Tap the small Microphone icon on your keyboard
If you already have a text thread open, tap the typing box so your on-screen keyboard appears. On iPhone: tap the microphone icon in the bottom-right corner (below the keyboard). On Android: tap the microphone icon in the top toolbar row above the letters (or bottom-right on Samsung keyboard).

Speak naturally and say punctuation words out loud
Start talking at normal conversational speed. To add punctuation, speak the punctuation word clearly. For example, say: "Hi Tom comma are we still meeting for lunch today question mark" — your phone will write "Hi Tom, are we still meeting for lunch today?" You can also say "period," "exclamation point," or "new line" to start a fresh paragraph.

Review the words, correct any typos, and tap Send
When finished, tap the small keyboard icon (or tap the microphone again) to stop listening. Read over the text on screen. If the phone misheard a word, tap directly on the word with your finger to erase and fix it, then tap the blue or green upward arrow to send your message.

If your screen matches the description above, you have followed the steps correctly. Continue to the next step.
If You Don't See It / Troubleshooting
If the microphone icon is missing from your keyboard
On iPhone: Go to Settings → General → Keyboard → scroll down and turn ON "Enable Dictation" (green). On Android: Go to Settings → General management (or System) → Keyboard settings → turn ON "Voice typing" / "Voice input."
If Siri, Gemini, or Google Assistant does not respond when you speak
Press and hold the Side button on your iPhone (or Power / Home button on Android) for 2 seconds to trigger voice listening manually.
If the phone misheard or misspelled a name or word
Tap directly on the mistaken word with your finger. Use the backspace key on your keyboard to erase it and type or speak the correct word.
Good to Know
- Hold your phone comfortably 6 to 10 inches from your mouth — speaking in a steady, relaxed tone gives the highest accuracy.
- Modern smartphones feature automatic punctuation that inserts commas and periods if you pause naturally between thoughts.
- Dictation adapts to your voice and vocabulary over time, getting faster and more accurate the more you use it.
- On newer Android devices, Google Assistant is powered by Gemini, but responds to the identical "Hey Google" voice commands and side button shortcuts.
