How to safely use Facebook to view family photos and message relatives without posting publicly

Direct Answer

Search for your family member's name and tap "Photos" to browse albums quietly. To chat privately, tap the Messenger icon, search their name, type your note, and tap Send. Viewing photos never posts anything to your profile.

Why You Might Want to Do This

  • To see recent pictures of your kids, grandchildren, weddings, and vacations without fear of making a public mistake.
  • To send private notes, congratulations, or questions directly to relatives without posting on a public wall.
  • To stay connected with old friends and family safely on your own schedule.

Before You Start

  • Open the Facebook or Messenger app on your phone, tablet, or computer.
  • Make sure you are signed into your account.

Simply looking at photos, zooming in, or reading updates will NEVER post anything to your profile or notify anyone.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Open Facebook and tap the search magnifying glass

Tap the blue Facebook app icon, then tap the small magnifying glass in the top-right corner.

If You Don't See It / Troubleshooting

If you accidentally tap the "What's on your mind?" box

Do not worry! Tap the "X" or back arrow in the top corner to close the box without typing or posting anything.

If you receive a message from a "friend" asking for money or emergency gift cards

Scammers frequently hack accounts to send fake emergency messages. DO NOT send money or gift card codes. Call your friend on the telephone to check on them.

Good to Know

  • Nobody can see how many times you viewed their photos or visited their page.
  • Messenger chats are separate and private — they do NOT appear on your public Facebook wall.
