Network Security Overview

A network is a group of computers connected together to share resources and data. Network security is a broad term and includes protection of all networks of a particular company or institution and thus the valuable data and operations. When we use the phrase that ‘our network is secure’ it means that our data and network is protected from competitors and unauthorized parties and they cannot reach our insightful data due to security measures adopted.

The greater the security levels or layers between your data and third party the safer is your network. Perhaps in the modern world where staying up to date to technology is of great importance network is the most important thing for your company. Network covers your email, browsing, internet and sharing printers and scanners. If the network goes down by any means it can restrict many of your activities so it is very important that you protect your network all the time.Network can be affected by many attacks but basically the two broad areas are

  • Attack on your work station or personal computer by virus or spyware and adware
  • Attack on your servers which play a vital role in sending and receiving files and storing important data in an organization in case of accidental power failure or fiddling

It is thus very important to take preventive measures to stay on top of your business and to avoid unwanted situations. Some of the measures we can take are

  • Try to keep your network updated by installing a reliable antivirus and continuous monitoring of bugs and updating of virus databases. There are a lot of annoying viruses but there are only few that can cause your system to crash. Always watch out for the bugs by getting efficient  with every new and effective security software.
  • Keep your servers under checks and locked in rooms. Remove storage devices such as hard drives from systems that aren’t in use any more. Install alarms where necessary and stay alert as there is no system that can control breaking in physically to steal your important data.
  • Keep your system updated with all the required security patches and evaluate and monitor the need occasionally. Block users and restrict access as soon as an employee leaves the company to avoid any unwanted circumstances or potential threats. Organizations are starting to use Dell computer forensics to help combat and review potential misuse of their systems.
  • Occasionally change passwords in the network but under certain rules to make them strong and hard to break. Try to include a digit, Capital and small letter and special characters because a loosely generated password can be source of threat to whole network.

A firewall controls all the incoming and outgoing traffic and detects the potential threat of malicious program known as Trojan horse which can control other persons system. Make sure that your firewall is installed, updated is set to be on

A network can only be completed secured if the hardware, software all are protected by all possible means and the users are educated about the correct usage of work stations in the network. Because perhaps a firewall can block some unwanted sites but it completely depends upon user to stay alarmed and updated about what he is browsing and what he needs to stay safe in external world.
