Data Recovery Tips

The worst thing that can ever happen to any computer user is deleting important data accidently or due to some virus. To avoid permanent data loss, you have to be very careful before doing anything. Following the guidelines provided below can increase your chances of recovering the data.

Prevent losing the data forever: Data loss may occur due to power surge or hardware malfunction. If the drive is making clicking or grinding noises, shut down your computer completely as these sounds can be due to the read/write heads hitting the hard disk plates. If you do not check this now, severe or complete data loss may occur. You need to see some specialist in this case but if the loss was due to accidental deletion, you may recover it yourself. Use your system scarcely till the lost data is recovered. If the hard disk is being used frequently, there is a chance that some of your lost data may be over-written. Do not copy any files to the disk which lost data. Avoid web browsing as this adds to the cache which is saved on the hard drive. Avoid using unnecessary programs before recovery. Do not restart the computer.

Preparing for Recovery: Now it is necessary to free up some space on the drive that lost data for the recovery process. The more space your drive has, the less chance that new files over write your lost data. You can delete old file that you do not need any more or shift them to another drive or USB. Empty recycle bin. Clear Internet Explorer cache. You can do this by going to Tools> Internet Options> General> Delete Files.

Recovery Guide: Do not install any program on the affected drive. Find a good data recovery software (if you do not have one already installed on your system) and install it on any other drive than the affected one. Start the data recovery program. Select the disk which lost data. It will take a while to analyze and get lost files details. Select the data you want to recover and provide a location to save the recovered data. Do not recover the files on the same disk. After recovering the files, check if they are intact and usable. If some application is recovered, run to check its functionality. All data cannot be recovered by this method. If some files are empty or incomplete, try to mend the files with some special utility.

Avoiding Data Loss in future: Prevention is better than cure. Recovering the data is a lot difficult than taking some steps not to lose it in the first place. Always take a backup before upgrading your system. Use latest utilities for data security such as firewalls and virus protection. Keep the system in a ventilated environment to avoid overheating. Use UPS to avoid power surges. Do not move the computers when they are ON. Avoid static discharge while handling the media and establish a structured backup program to keep a copy of your important data.
